With the end of the year coming up, we are busy at work preparing to launch a new 7-module educational program, with brand new materials, for 2020.  As you plan your end of year giving, we wanted you to see this second email of a five part series that presents, from the perspective of key “Caminos’” staff members and volunteers, why our organization is so crucial to combatting the growing water crisis in our region of Mexico and around the world.

Why Education Is So Critical On Every Level

Our Water Quality Monitoring program gives us the numbers that our region desperately needs.  These numbers in turn give us a foundation so we can understand the details and the severity of the water situation and take action. However, the numbers alone only tell us part of the story. Water is an essential element –  without which life can’t exist – and it is often a difficult subject to grasp. When you talk about water, you must also talk about environment, health, community and family, as well as how they all interact.

According to our Community Outreach Fellow, Karina Bautista, “Many times I encounter people within San Miguel that have never heard about the water crisis and don’t know how our aquifers work or their depleted state. Nor do they know about the health consequences of drinking and cooking with [contaminated] tap water.  Every household I go to has different issues and different needs based on their circumstances, and there isn’t always a clear solution. But step one is always to understand the issues.”

For the past few years, as a critical element of our diverse work, one of our major focuses is on educating different audiences about the high levels of arsenic and fluoride in their groundwater, depleting water supplies, and what will happen if they do not act.  We have invested time into developing educational materials, programs, and events that make complicated subjects easier to grasp for people with all levels of education. Before even considering moving towards plans of community organization, installations of solutions, and technical trainings, we make sure people really understand their current situation and why a change in their way of life is urgently needed.
The Gift of Knowledge - Pass it On

If like many people, you are now planning your year end giving, we hope you will seriously consider a gift to Caminos de Agua so that we can educate more people, as a first step, while there is still time.  However, in addition to helping financially, there is a very important additional task we would like to ask of you. This holiday season, when you are with your friends and family, give them the gift of knowledge. Tell them about the grave state of water, our vital shared resource, and give them information about what they can do to stay safe.

What Can Your End Of Year Gift Make Possible?
  • USD $70 allows us to complete water quality testing for a community at risk;
  • USD $250 funds a two-day educational water workshop for families;
  • USD $750 builds a rainwater harvesting system in a local community;
  • USD $1,000 provides the materials for the development of a low-cost groundwater treatment system that removes arsenic and fluoride; and
  • USD $1,500 provides emergency water filtration units for 60 families in a natural disaster zone.

  • MXN $ 1,400 nos permite completar las pruebas de calidad del agua para una comunidad en riesgo;
  • MXN $5,000 financia un taller educativo de agua de dos días para familias;
  • MXN $15,000 construye un sistema de captación de agua de lluvia en una comunidad local;
